What is an IUD?

An intrauterine device, or IUD, is a T-shaped device about the size of a quarter that is placed inside the uterus to prevent pregnancy. It works by preventing sperm from reaching and fertilizing eggs. If used correctly, your chances of getting pregnant with an IUD are less than 1%.

Who Can Benefit from IUDs?

IUDs are often a great choice for women who do not wish to take a pill every day. Once an IUD is inserted, you will not have to think about it. They are also long-lasting and safe to use if you are breastfeeding. However, you should not use an IUD if you have an STD, have had a recent pelvic infection, are pregnant, have unexplained vaginal bleeding, or have cancer of the cervix or uterus.

Types of IUDs

At VitalityMds, we offer the following FDA-approved IUDs:

Kyleena®

Kyleena works by releasing the hormone levonorgestrel which thickens cervical mucus, preventing sperm from entering the uterus. Kyleena lasts for about 5 years.

Mirena®

Mirena releases the hormone progestin to thin the lining of the uterus and partially suppress ovulation, as well as thicken mucus in the cervix to stop sperm from reaching an egg. Mirena lasts for around 6 years.

Skyla®

Skyla releases the hormone progestin into the uterus at a slow and continuous rate, thickening cervical muscles to inhibit sperm movement and thinning the line of the uterus to suppress ovulation. Skyla lasts for around 3 years.

How is an IUD Inserted?

An IUD can be inserted during an office visit. Taking over-the-counter pain medication such as ibuprofen a few hours before your procedure can be helpful to prevent cramping. To begin this procedure, your feet will be placed in stirrups and your doctor will insert a speculum into the vagina. The IUD will be placed in a small tube that will be inserted into the vagina, up through the cervix, and into the uterus. The IUD is then pushed out of the tube, and the tube is removed. Strings that are attached to the IUD will hand 1-2 inches into the vagina. While an IUD can be placed at any time during your period cycle, it may be more comfortable to have one inserted while you’re on your period, as this is when the cervix is most open.

Highly Recommended

Met with Dr. Webb today for a second opinion on a surgical procedure and he was very thorough going over everything, answered my questions, explained options in great detail and even went over other health issues I was having that weren’t related. I never felt rushed or like my concerns weren’t important or valid. His staff was very welcoming as well! Highly recommend!
