What is Prostate Cancer Screening?
Prostate cancer screening is done to look for signs of cancer early before it spreads. There are two main tests used to screen for prostate cancer, including prostate specific antigen (PSA) test, and digital rectal examination (DRE).
Prostate Specific Antigen Test
The PSA test is efficient for detecting early-stage prostate cancer, particularly in those with many risk factors. This is a blood test that measures the levels of PSA in the blood. Those with prostate cancer may have higher levels of PSA. However, because there are many factors that can affect PSA levels, it is important that a skilled physician interprets your PSA test results. If your PSA results are abnormal, your doctor may also recommend a biopsy to determine if you have prostate cancer.
Digital Rectal Examination
During a DRE, your physician will insert a gloved, lubricated finger into the rectum to feel the surface of the prostate for any irregularities.
